A day in Venice: Giudecca

There’s an island, a few meters from Venice that often- unjustly so- is snobbed. It’s the Giudecca, a peaceful lagoon where many Venetians still live and where you can find unexpected treasures. There are many reasons to visit Giudecca. First of all, the panorama: by simply crossing the same named canal, you are able to witness Venice from a completely different perspective.  Zattere, Salute and San Marco will take on a new form with a different, but always breath-taking form. Besides, the beauty of the Giudecca, between palaces, walkways and stone shores, has nothing to envy with its sister island Venice. On the contrary, here the atmosphere is definitely more relaxed and tranquil thanks to the few tourists that choose to visit the island. So here are a few ideas on how to spend a wonderful day on the island located 5 minutes away from Venice.

The church of the Redentore

It’s one of the Palladian marvels of Venice.  The formal neatness of it’s incredible façade will leave you with your mouth wide open (and inside you will find works from Tintoretto, Veronese, Francesco Bassano and many others).  Not to be missed, the beautiful, luminous interior. And to remember obviously that the Basilica of the Redentore is the destination of many pilgrims of the well loved Festa del Redentore that is held in July.

The Casa dei Tre Oci

It’s a splendid palace that offers a spectacular view of the San Marco Basin. But inside, Casa dei Tre Oci hosts periodic photographic expositions with works from the most prominent artists of the world. Just in the last few years there have been exhibitions from artists like Salgado and Helmut Newton.

Erbe Matte

We’ve already spoken about it in a dedicated post, but this space is just incredible. Bring the family to Erbe Matte and you will not be sorry. An urban garden in this particular context is difficult to find in other places. Reserve here and eat the fruits of the Venetian soil.

The panoramic terrace with pool

If instead you wish to enjoy a romantic, and at the same time hip, moment, don’t pass up an aperitif during sun down on the rooftop bar of the Hilton hotel. This ex-industrial complex, Molino Stucky houses in fact Skyline, a panoramic locale with a pool from which you can enjoy Venice from with an out of the ordinary perspective.
