It’s that time of the year you spend all year waiting for and you never are prepared for when it finally does come around. Especially, if you plan to be on vacation, but Christmas in Venice is like no other Christmas in the world, just simply because you are in Venice.
As always, even during this time, Venice has its peculiarities, for example, if in all other parts of the world Santa Claus races are organized here in Venice, Santa Claus is on a boat with oars. On December 17th the Grand Canal from the Pietà to Ca’Foscari fills up with traditional boats full of rowers dressed as Santa.
Don’t worry for the more traditionalists, after a Sprint in Lido on the 3rd of December, you’ll find the classical Santa race throughout the alleyways of Venice December18th.
And if you are looking for holiday cheer, this year all around the city there will be new spaces decorated with lights making the island extra romantic and an even more perfect destination for Christmas.
Venice will in fact glow brighter with the magical My Christmas Venice and Christmas Art light design events. Along the splendid Rio Terà dei Catecumeni and Rio dei Saloni are displayed 15 interpretations of a Chirstmas tree and poetry from different artists. The exhibiton concludes with the imminent Christmas tree sculpture of Gianni Tarli next to the Salute Basilica.
Yet the cherry on top to your Christmas vacation could be the incredible second edition of the nativity scenes created in Murano glass by some of the most incredible maestri of the island. From the 17th of December to the 18th of January in the Scalzi Church, adjacent to the train station you can see the pieces displayed.
