Venice, Queen of the seas. Well at least in the past it was, just as the many traditional Venetian songs remember.  It is well known that the Serinissima has many marine establishments from, trade with the Orient to the battle of Lepanto. But the everyday relationship with water makes this Lagoon City a timeless pearl of uniqueness.

To better understand this even more precious harmony, apart from admiring the traditional boats that are strictly with oars (there aren’t just gondolas) it is possible to grasp the nautical spirit in Venice by visiting an authentic sailboat.

Amerigo Vespucci is a ship belonging to the Italian Marine that often stops in Venice.  More than hundred meters long, for more than 80 years it has hosted students of the Official Marine Academy. Ready to take on life out at sea like “the olden days.” Of course this ship doesn’t have much to do with the renowned Galleys of the Serinissima, but the opportunity to visit a mast ship of these dimensions in Venice can’t be passed up.

Launched in 1931, The Amerigo Vespucci is the oldest unit in service in the Italian Marine. Seeing it docked in the Castello quarter along the Riva dei Schiavoni, with it’s stern facing San Marco definitely has an effect.

The ship- that bears the name of the celebrated explorer honored for having discovered the “New World” named then America- is found in the perfect context, docked in the lagoon with it’s masts standing out on the Palaces in the background facing the San Marco Basin. Once onboard you can enjoy a breath-taking view of the city, apart from taking in an incredible sea-life atmosphere.

Unfortunately the period in which it’s docked in Venice doesn’t last very long, just as the other ports it visits. In 2017 Amerigo Vespucci will be docked in Riva Biagio from the 13th to the 20th of October, before heading off to Trieste.

Even if visiting the ship is free, better prepare yourself by checking online for opening hours and any changes that may occur.
